Dec. 30--Proviso East is not going to win the Proviso West Holiday Tournament. No. 1 Morgan Park saw to that Monday night.
It's been a coming-out party for the Pirates nevertheless, and no team's stock has risen more.
Led by high-flying senior guard Antonio Williams, Proviso East will play for fifth place on Wednesday after defeating Larkin 62-42 on Tuesday in Hillside.
Williams scored 28 points and Tyler Chisom added 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Pirates (6-3), who put a scare into Morgan Park in the quarterfinals after soundly defeating reigning Class 2A champion Uplift in the first round.
Christian Negron had 17 points, seven rebounds and seven blocked shots for Larkin (7-6).
Proviso East will face Young in the fifth-place game at 4 p.m.
Young 59, San Diego Cathedral 58: Lucas Williamson made two free throws with 12 seconds left as Young (5-4) survived after failing to protect a 15-point lead. Williamson had 17 points and 11 rebounds, and Xavier Castaneda scored 19 points for the Dolphins. Brandon McCoy, Cathedral Catholic's 7-foot, five-star prospect, had 26 points, 18 rebounds and three blocked shots.
Hillcrest 54, Uplift 53: Freshman Isaac Stanback had 16 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks, and Stephon King (11 points) made two free throws to give Hillcrest (9-3) a 54-50 lead with 22 seconds left. Demarius Jacobs had 16 points and six rebounds for Uplift (7-5).
Proviso West 52, Morton 39: Emmanuel Cross scored 15 points and Elijah Gibson had eight points and 16 rebounds as Proviso West (4-4) won for the second straight day. Liddell Davis added 11 points and nine rebounds in the victory.
The host Panthers will play Hillcrest for the consolation title at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
