Boy 'thrown into the air' during horror hit and run

People have described the moment a teenager was "thrown into the air" during a horror hit and run in Wirral yesterday.

A 17-year-old boy was taken to hospital with serious injuries after being hit by a car which sped off from the scene as people rushed to his aid at around 7pm yesterday on Naseby Close in Noctorum.

Shortly after, emergency services arrived at the scene and the boy was taken to hospital with serious arm and leg injuries.

Detectives said the driver made off from the scene of the crash without stopping.

Officers also confirmed that shortly after the crash, at around 7.15pm, a red Ford Focus was found on fire at the junction of Boundary Road and Worcester Road with enquiries ongoing to determine whether this was the vehicle involved.

Witnesses who saw the crash and the aftermath have spoken to the ECHO about how the incident unfolded.

One person, who asked not be identified, spoke of seeing a vehicle "racing" down the street before hitting a cyclist who was "thrown into the air" before falling on the floor.

The witness said: "I saw the whole thing, the car came speeding along, he was thrown into the air.

"It was a horrible thing to witness and then people came out to help him before the police and ambulance arrived."

Another person, who also asked not to be named, said they had been woken up by the commotion outside.

He said: "I didn't see him get hit but I saw a red car speeding away and there was a lad lying in the road.

"A bunch of people came running out.

"It was a bit of a shock and then the police came and they were around for quite a while."

Another nearby resident also said they had not seen the boy being hit but had witnessed the aftermath.

She told the ECHO: "I didn't hear anything at all but then saw there were loads of police around.

"I didn't know what had happened, the police can be here a bit with bits of fighting going on but then we realised there was someone lying in the road.

"I couldn't' tell if it was a boy or girl until the ambulance arrived and took them off. The police were here about an hour.

"It's a scary thing to hear happening in your neighbourhood."

Detective Inspector Barbara Hebden of Merseyside Police has appealed for information after the 'appalling' incident.

She said: "At this stage, we are looking to confirm the exact circumstances, but to be involved in such a collision and fail to stop is appalling and we’re keen to identify the driver at the earliest opportunity.

"If you saw the collision or a car matching this description driving at speed in the area, pass on your information, CCTV, dashcam or any other images, which could prove invaluable to finding those responsible."

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact @MerPolCC on Twitter or ‘Merseyside Police Contact Centre’ on Facebook with reference 21000624017.
