NEWCASTLE firefighters have hailed the courage of a young boy after they were forced to cut him free from a laundry sink on Wednesday night.

Lambton's technical rescue crew was called to Barton Street at Mayfield about 7.30pm after reports the child's fingers had become stuck in the basin's plug holes.

Mayfield West crews also attended.

Fire and Rescue NSW said the four-year-old, Ruben, had four of his fingers "well and truly trapped in the basin's drain plug hole".

"Ruben showed how brave he was considering his predicament, and after removing the strainer flange from the basin, was made comfortable on a lounge chair," the Lambton crew said in a statement.

"Firefighters used manual manipulation to free one of his trapped fingers and the other trapped fingers were released after using small tools from the finger kit to cut away the drain components.

The four-year-old escaped with some minor lacerations, which were treated by firefighters before paramedics arrived to give him the all-clear.

"Ruben informed firefighters he would have something exciting to tell his friends next time he saw them," the Lambton crew said.

"All the best to you young Ruben, well done on being patient and very brave."
