Boy, 3, abandoned in freezing cemetery with his pet dog two days before Christmas

A three-year-old boy was abandoned with his pet dog in a snow-covered cemetery just two days before Christmas.

The tot was spotted running after a car as it pulled away leaving him alone with his pup in freezing temperatures.

A woman reported the heartbreaking scene as the youngster tried to keep up with the fleeing car, as it left the Hope Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Hinckley, Ohio, on Wednesday, December 23.

She called police and said the boy and his dog were running after a blue, medium-sized car.

Officers arrived and found the boy, who told them his name was Tony and took the boy and his dog into protective custody.

The boy knew the first names of his mum and dad, but had no idea where he lived.

The youngster was placed in foster care and officers made a public appeal to find his family.

Tony's relatives spotted his image in local media and contacted his dad, who police say has been "very cooperative".

Officers say the boy was supposed to be in his mother's custody when he was abandoned.

In a statement, Hinckley Police Department said: "While the investigation is still on going with a lot of questions still unanswered I want to assure everyone that Tony is doing very well in the loving home of a foster family here in Medina County.

"His dad has been very cooperative with us and Children Services in the investigation. I will release further information when I can."

The community came together and brought dozens of Christmas gifts for the little boy, who found himself living with a foster family over the festivities.

Hinckley Police Department's spokesman added: "I would like to thank everyone for their kindness in wanting to buy Christmas presents for Tony, take him in and adopt him.

"You all are amazing people and why we have such a great community here in Hinckley, all of Medina County and beyond."
