Boston Red Sox sign Florida quarterback

The headline should not read New England Patriots. It is not an error.

The Boston Red Sox signed five draftees on Friday and one of them is intriguing.

The Red Sox added a pitcher, of sorts, Florida quarterback Feleipe Franks, a 31st-round pick.

The 6-foot-6, University of Florida starting quarterback hasn’t played baseball since high school. Franks signed for $40,000 and has expressed interest in coming to spring training and pursuing an MLB career.

After the draft, the redshirt junior stepped on a mound for the first time in five years and, according to a Boston Globe report, touched 94 mph.

Franks, passed for 2,457 yards, 24 touchdowns and threw six interceptions while completing 58.4 percent of his passes in 2018.

This is not the first time the Red Sox have dipped into the Florida football roster.  They drafted current Cincinnati Bengal and former Gator quarterback, Jeff Driskel, in 2012, on day three of the draft.

Tom Brady also was a draft pick of the Montreal Expos, though pitcher was actually a catcher in high school.
