Bosses' memo to Newsquest staff - have a happy holiday

Lest Newsquest journalists were not copied in on the following Christmas memo from their US bosses, I thought I'd better pass it on.

It was sent jointly by Gannett's chairman and chief executive, Craig Dubow, and the company's president and chief operating officer, Gracia Martore.

As we celebrate the holiday season and the coming new year with our families and friends, we want to thank each of you for all of your great work and commitment.

We have made significant progress during 2010 as we continue to build on the value we bring to our consumers, business customers and communities. They remain at the heart of everything we do.

Our work makes a real difference in people's lives and your contributions have a lasting impact. You have helped make our company strong.

On behalf of the entire management team, we want to thank you for everything you do for Gannett and our customers every day.

We hope you enjoy some well-deserved time with your loved ones. We wish you a very safe and happy holiday season and we look forward to seeing you in 2011.

Best regards, Craig and Gracia

I'm sure the Newsquest staff across Britain who are up in arms at their frozen wages, axed pension arrangements and mandatory redundancies (latest examples in Scotland)) are touched by those sentiments.

They will certainly agree that Dubow's and Martore's work has indeed made "a real difference in people's lives" with "a lasting impact."
