Guardiola shakes hands with Thomas Tuchel, before assembling his players for a lengthy post-match berating. That was a stop-start game, hindered by conditions and the number of substitutions, but it improved late on, and Angus Gunn did his prospects no harm with three saves in the shootout. The Pep Guardiola era is up and running. Thanks for joining me. Bye.
Manchester City win 6-5 on penalties!
Merino’s penalty is unconvincing, and Gunn makes another save! City win the shootout, after it finished 1-1 after 90 minutes.
Updated
Angelino scores for Manchester City! 6-5
Tucked into the bottom-right corner by the full back. And now Merino must score for Dortmund...
Larsen misses for Dortmund! 5-5
This is never going to end. Gunn dives to his left to make another excellent save.
Sterling misses for Manchester City! 5-5
You could see this coming. It was a well-struck penalty, to be fair, but Burki tips it around the post...
Hober scores for Dortmund! 5-5
Blasted into the top corner...
Nolito scores for Manchester City! 5-4
Nolito’s first real action in a City shirt is a confidently struck penalty.
Pulisic scores for Dortmund! 4-4
He does, just, as Gunn gets down really well, but sees the ball deflect into the roof of the net!
Aguero scores for Manchester City! 4-3
Aguero, like many others, is unhappy with the surface around the penalty spot, but his effort is low to Burki’s left, beating the keeper’s dive. Pulisic has to score...
Burnic scores for Dortmund! 3-3
Despite Gunn’s attempts to put him off, Burnic coolly sends the young goalkeeper the wrong way...
Silva scores for Manchester City! 3-2
Curled inside the left-hand post to edge City back ahead...
Castro scores for Dortmund! 2-2
The midfielder goes straight down the middle...
Fernandinho scores for Manchester City! 2-1
Three in a row as the City captain rolls the ball in the right corner...
Kagawa scores for Dortmund! 1-1
Kagawa repeats the trick, tucking the ball inside the post.
Adarabioyo scores for Manchester City! (City 1-0 Dortmund)
The central defender belts it into the corner, low to Burki’s right...
Two penalties taken – Sky were still showing adverts, forgive me – but Aleix Garcia and Felix Passlack both saw their penalties saved...
Full time: Borussia Dortmund 1-1 Manchester City
There will be penalties.
GOAL! Borussia Dortmund 1-1 Manchester City (Pulisic)
Leitner wins a late, late corner and with City’s defence sleeping, rolls it short to Kagawa. He finds Pulisic, who fires it low, through a crowd of players, and between Gunn’s legs.
Updated
93 mins: Hober has brought a bit of energy to Dortmund attacks, but is harried out of play close to the corner flag, with time running out...
Updated
91 mins: A mistake from Adarabioyo allows Kagawa to dribble into the area, and Fernandinho appears to clip his heels. The referee isn’t buying it, and penalises Kagawa for simulation. That’s a second Dortmund penalty appeal denied.
90 mins: Fernandinho, who looks set to last the full 95 minutes, gets a foot in to make an important challenge on the edge of the area.
89 mins: Hober almost unlocks the City defence with a drilled ball to Pulisic, but the American can’t bring it under control. Five added minutes.
87 mins: Silva and Aguero are capable of passing their way through an opposition defence despite being thirty yards apart; they do so here, but Silva can’t latch onto Aguero’s angled through ball, appealing in vain for a penalty.
86 mins: The crowd are urging a Dortmund equaliser, and the penalty shoot-out it will bring. They seem a little short of ideas. For Manchester City, even in this low-intensity affair, many of their young players have impressed – Adarabioyo in particular.
84 mins: Bony and Touré are taken off to allow Nolito and Sterling to come on. There could still be more than ten minutes left, what with the water breaks and all. Bony doesn’t look happy.
Nasri has been there since the start of pre-season, but so far 0 minutes on the pitch under Pep.

82 mins: A couple more changes coming up for City – Nolito and Raheem Sterling, last seen crashing out of Euro 2016, are going to get a brief taste of on-field action.
79 mins: Bony has worked tirelessly to carve out three chances, all of which he has missed. Agüero hasn’t really been involved, but was in the right place at the right time. A penny for your thoughts, Wilfried. Another City change, just before the goal – Angelino came on for Kolarov.
GOAL! Borussia Dortmund 0-1 Manchester City (Agüero)
Dortmund have been threatening for the last few minutes, but City counter, and Aleix Garcia slots a through ball to Silva, who tucks the ball under Bürki and into the path of Sergio Agüero, in front of an empty net. That’s their first ever goal under Pep Guardiola.
Updated
75 mins: After Bony dawdles in the opposition area, Dortmund break at speed, with Castro set free on goal – but his shot is tipped over by Gunn. An excellent save from Bryan Gunn’s son – quite literally, a son of a Gunn.
73 mins: Dortmund break down the right, with Maffeo forced to clear the ball awkwardly – it slices wide for a corner. The young full-back did well to avoid an own goal.
71 mins: This Dortmund squad is loaded with quick, tricky young players – Pulisic is the latest to make an impact, testing Denayer twice with runs forward. The second leads to a hefty foul that would surely have earned a yellow card in a competitive game.
69 minutes: More instructions from Guardiola to his players, who have the more senior side on the pitch for the last 20 minutes. By the way, if I know the International Champions Cup, this will go to penalties if it finishes goalless.
Another water break. The local Dortmund fans have broken into the Icelandic thunder clap; it’s already getting a bit played.
65 mins: Manchester City enjoying perhaps their best spell of the match now, with Silva finding Bony, who fires over. He will be keen to make an impression on Guardiola – a bit too keen, on the evidence of the second half.
63 mins: With Dortmund trying to organise themselves, Aleksandar Kolarov strides forward and fires over from thirty yards. Worth a go.
60 mins: Bony has a shot from 25 yards, but it deflects off Barta and is palmed away by Bürki. More substitutions for Dortmund – Burnic on for Sahin, Larsen on for Ramos, Hober on for Bartra. Only two Dortmund starters – Bürki and Moritz Leitner – are still on the pitch.
58 mins: One thing that Dortmund definitely are doing is pressing much higher, fitting nine outfield players into a postage stamp sized space. Their high line almost lets Silva in, but he is flagged offside – wrongly, as it turns out. Silva sees his shot saved by Bürki.
56 mins: Both teams have spent most of the first ten minutes trying to work out each other’s formations; those changes haven’t helped the flow of the game.
Updated
53 mins: Ramos finds space on the left-hand side of the box, but his cross-shot is well covered by Adarabioyo, who has performed well. The referee orders Dortmund’s substitutes to put on green bibs, while letting Guardiola’s casual attire slide.
51 mins: Sven Bender and Pusilic link up for a spell of quickfire passing on the edge of the Manchester City area, but can’t carve out a chance. Neater possession, less goalmouth action, is the story of the half so far.
49 mins: Pulisic lofts a high cross towards Ramos, who has stayed on as a lone forward for Dortmund. He brings it down, but is flagged offside. City, led by Silva in a central role, romp forward, but Kolarov is also caught offside on the left.
Updated
47 mins: Maffeo, on as a right-back in a more conventional back four with Denayer, Adarabioyo and Kolarov, makes an early slip but recovers to clear.
Peep!
The second half is under way. Here are the updated teams:
Borussia Dortmund: Bürki; Merino, Bender, Bartra, Passlack; Sahin, Castro, Leitner; Kagawa, Pusilic, Ramos.
Manchester City: Gunn; Maffeo, Denayer, Adarabioyo, Kolarov; Fernandinho, Touré, Aleix Garcia, Silva; Agüero, Bony.
Updated
We’ve still not restarted, with the fourth official putting in overtime on the electronic subs’ board – there’s been half a dozen changes for each side, with Agüero, David Silva and Yaya Touré all coming on for City. A full run-down for both teams to follow shortly...
There’s going to be changes aplenty for the second half. For Dortmund, Shinji Kagawa, Gonzalo Castro, Sven Bender and young American international Christian Pulisic are all on the touchline, receiving instructions. The PA is playing ‘Roll With It’ – Manchester has truly come to this corner of China.
Half-time reading: Here’s Alan Smith on Manchester City cutting out pizza, with a picture that may influence your lunchtime choices.
Half time: Borussia Dortmund 0-0 Manchester City
Manchester City have made chances for themselves, and for their opponents through dodgy defending, but it’s goalless at half time.
44 mins: Navas accelerates onto a long ball, but Bartra gets across well from centre-back to cut him off. City retain possession, and Delph lifts a cross to Iheanacho, who controls, turns and opens his body to place the ball in the far corner, but sees his shot tipped smartly around the post by Burki.
42 mins: A Dortmund corner, with Leitner arcing a near-post delivery that Otamendi has to flick away from danger. Just so you know, there will be no official winner of this three-team mini-tournament, after City’s game with Manchester United was called off. Cancel the open-top bus parade...
39 mins: Iheanacho picks up the ball 25 yards from goal and, full of his usual attacking intent, lashing a shot at goal that’s deflected wide. Zinchenko’s corner drops into a useful spot, but with limited numbers forward, Burki can collect it unopposed.
37 mins: Dembele squares up Otamendi, cutting in at speed on the left, and Otamendi looks to have clipped him inside the area. Looks a penalty, but the referee waves it away.
@niallmcveigh Re: Pep's pop-up craft ale bar: you know as well as I do that 'hops' would be in all lower case. And maybe not even a plural.

36 mins: Mor has been the brightest presence on either team, and the Turkish international slaloms across the field before teeing up Schmelzer for a one-two. His shot, from a tight angle, is scooped straight into Caballero’s arms.
34 mins: Dortmund’s transfers this summer – Out: Ilkay Gündogan, Mats Hummels and Henrikh Mkhitaryan. In: Mario Götze, André Schurrle, Ousmane Dembélé, Raphaël Guerreiro, Sebastian Rode, Marc Bartra, Emre Mor and Mikel Merino. Net spend: £6.5 million. That’s what they call decent business, isn’t it?
32 mins: Iheanacho is barged off the ball, giving City a presentable free kick 30 yards out. Kolarov swings it in towards the far post, but it’s headed away.
30 mins: Fernando piles through two challenges in quick succession, but Dortmund’s pressure on the ball stalls City’s attacking momentum. The chances have dried up in the last few minutes, with only the emergence of Sergio Agüero on the touchline to warm up raising a murmur from the crowd.
28 mins: Zinchenko cuts into the area and almost finds Iheanacho with a low cross, before Dortmund, as has been their tactic so far, launch a counter. Fernandinho, City’s captain for the day, is booked for a clumsy foul on the halfway line.
26 mins: Caballero is off his line well to beat Ramos, who goes through on goal in slow motion. His clearance flies to Emre Mor, who dallies over taking a speculative long shot. The thought of Caballero, or indeed Joe Hart, as a sweeper keeper is a frightening one.
24 mins: Time for a water break. It’s 31 degrees in Shenzhen, and humidity is 75%. Despite that, there’s been a reasonable tempo so far. Guardiola has a few choice words for his players after a sloppy start, with Zinchenko getting a particularly strong talking-to.
Updated
22 mins: Zinchenko tries to link up with Iheanacho, but his lofted ball bounces too far in front of the Nigerian striker. Moments later, Navas twists and turns in the box, but his low cross is hacked away.
20 mins: Navas, playing as a right wing-back ahead of a three-man central defence, is shoved by Schmelzer, and is left holding the small of his back. Fernandinho takes, and wastes, the free kick.
Updated
17 mins: Another defensive slip, this time for Adarabioyo, as City continue to struggle with playing it from the back. Again, Dortmund can’t force Caballero to make a save. Iheanacho still with the only shot on target.
15 mins: The first quiet spell after an open start, punctuated only by Jesus Navas attempting a bit of trickery on the right. Guardiola is pacing the touchline in t-shirt and jeans, looking like a man who’d serve you a pint of craft ale at a pop-up bar called ‘Hops’, or similar.
13 mins: Delph challenges Rode with a straight, raised leg – painful for the Dortmund midfielder, but no action taken despite his team-mates’ anger with referee Fu Ming. It was a foul, but not full Fabregas:
10 mins: A couple of half-chances for City, with Navas picking out Delph, who has got forward well early on. He fires a low shot wide though, before Iheanacho offers up a similarly scuffed low effort, straight into Burki’s arms.
8 mins: Caballero is not quite mastering the whole playing it out from the back business – he once again plays the ball straight to a yellow shirt, and is relieved to see Emre Mor’s shot bend wide.
Updated
7 mins: Dortmund captain Schmelzer dances down the left and along the touchline, firing a low cross past Caballero that nobody can turn into the empty net. Dortmund starting the stronger...
6 mins: Caballero gets away with a shocking clearance, drilling the ball straight to Dembele, whose shot is blocked by Otamendi.
“Guardiola also has to contend with Champions League qualifiers in August, as a result of City finishing fourth last season” notes Raymond Reardon. There are some tricky opponents in there, too – City could face Roma or Mönchengladbach, among others.
Updated
4 mins: Dembele, who impressed against Manchester United on the right, is lining up on the left of a midfield three. He fires a cross towards Ramos but Adarabioyo is on hand to head away.
2 mins: Clichy tees up Iheanacho, who fires a pot shot wide wide of Burki’s near post. Delph has more joy down the right, his low cross just evading Zinchenko.
Peep!
We’re off...
Kick-off was due a couple of minutes ago, but the teams aren’t out yet, a big ‘International Champions Cup’ logo is being fluttered in the centre circle, and the crowd is a sea of smartphones. Plenty of new signings in that Dortmund team, with Marc Bartra, Sebastian Rode, Emre Mor and Ousmane Dembélé all starting. There’s no Mario Götze or André Schürrle, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has flown back to Germany for the birth of his second child.

Preamble
Hello. The cancellation of Monday’s friendly with Manchester United has left Pep Guardiola in a bit of a bind; the new Manchester City manager has overseen just one pre-season match in four weeks, with only two to go before the Premier League season begins.
City play Arsenal in Gothenburg (do they just pull these fixtures out of a hat, or what?) on 7th August, but first they finish their jaunt to China against Borussia Dortmund, who put United in their place last week with a 4-1 victory in Shanghai.
Like his first match, the 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich, Guardiola’s second game is against a team he knows all too well; Thomas Tuchel’s Dortmund pushed his Bayern team all the way – okay, most of the way – in last season’s Bundesliga, and will be tricky opponents.
Kick-off is at 12.30pm BST, 7.30pm local time; team news to follow.
