Boris Johnson to hold coronavirus press conference from new £2.6m No 9 briefing room

Boris Johnson will host a coronavirus press conference later today, Downing Street confirmed.

The Prime Minister will lead the briefing from the new No 9 media room for the first time, which the government reportedly spent £2.6m on renovating.

Mr Johnson will be joined by chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty and chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance. The conference is set to take place at 5pm.

It comes on the day of a major easing of England’s coronavirus lockdown where some outdoor activity has been able to resume.

Friends and families can now meet outdoors and in gardens in groups of up to six or two households.

While outdoor sports facilities can reopen after the stay-at-home order ended today.

Mr Johnson stressed that “we must remain cautious, with cases rising across Europe and new variants threatening our vaccine roll out”.

“Despite today’s easements, everyone must continue to stick to the rules, remember hands, face, space, and come forward for a vaccine when called,” the Prime Minister added.

In this afternoon's briefing, he is expected to urge the public to take personal responsibility by sticking to the restrictions.

Downing Street said that the roadmap to easing coronavirus restrictions remains “on track” with the Government keeping the “relevant data and scientific evidence under review” ahead of the next step.

The Prime Minister’s official spokesman told a Westminster briefing: “We remain on track to deliver the road map.

“And we will continue to keep the relevant data and scientific evidence under review as we now move towards April 12, which as you know is step two.”
