Boris Johnson to address MPs on expected changes to English lockdown rules

Boris Johnson is expected to announce new coronavirus lockdown restrictions for large parts of England on Monday.

The Prime Minister will deliver a speech to MPs where he is anticipated to reveal details of a “tiered” approach to local lockdowns south of the border, reports the Mirror.

Health officials are said to be growing increasingly concerned over the sharp rise in daily coronavirus infections in recent days.

A total of 13,864 people were confirmed to have tested positive for Covid-19 in the UK on Friday. More than 1,000 of those were recorded in Scotland.

It has been speculated that pubs and restaurants in some parts of England could see similar restrictions to those introduced in Scotland today..

In a letter to MPs, Boris Johnson’s strategic advisor Sir Edward Lister said that details of any measures will be finalised “as soon as possible”.

The letter said: “The government will discuss a set of measures with local leaders all of which present difficult choices.

"We must seek to strike the right balance between driving down transmission, and safeguarding our economy and society from the worst impact.”

Virus case rates have been shooting up around the UK as the country enters a second wave - with parts of the north recording some of the worst figures.

Overall, the UK's Covid-19 R number has dropped slightly to 1.5 this week.

A rate of infection between 1.2 and 1.5 means that on average every 10 people infected will infect between 12 and 15 other people.

The Scottish Government said that Scotland's R number is currently higher than the rest of the UK.

It is thought that the number of new infections in England is growing by between 4% and 9% every day.
