Boris Johnson's next announcement date as PM 'considers banning indoor mixing'

Boris Johnson has issued regular announcements at Downing Street in recent weeks to keep the nation updated amid the growing threat of the Omicron variant.

The Prime Minster 's last press conference was held last Wednesday, when he urged people to get their booster vaccines as part of a "great national fightback" against the new strain.

In the same briefing, Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty warned the worst is yet to come as the UK deals with "two epidemics".

The Prime Minister is reportedly considering going back to step 2 restrictions after Christmas (PA)

Cases of coronavirus have continued to rise at an alarming rate since the last press conference which has prompted reports the government is considering imposing tougher restrictions.

Mr Johnson held a Cabinet meet yesterday as Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) warned covid deaths could rise to 6,000 a day without extra measures

According to the Mirror, insiders at Whitehall claim the PM is weighing up a return to Step 2 restrictions in England.

This would lead to a ban on indoor mixing and a return to hospitality venues being forced to serve customers outside.

The Daily Telegraph reported Mr Johnson has been presented with three options to tackle the spread of the virus.

This ranged from guidance asking people to limit indoor contacts, to rules on household mixing, social distancing and a curfew on pubs and restaurants, and thirdly a full lockdown.

Ministers such as Dominic Raab and Sajid Javid both refused to rule out restrictions being imposed before Christmas

Mr Raab told Sky News: "I just can't make hard, fast guarantees,

"The Prime Minister has got some very difficult decisions to take and I'm sure he'll be thinking very hard at them."

When is Boris Johnson's next announcement?

When the Prime Minister has considered the options, the exact nature of the new restrictions will be confirmed at a Downing Street press conference.

The date of the next briefing has yet to be confirmed, but these are often announced at short notice

According to the Sunday Times, Boxing Day has been pencilled in for an announcement with measures possibly starting as early as December 27.
