Boris Johnson press conference: Time, how to watch and what new Covid measures could be announced

Boris Johnson is set to hold a press conference on Wednesday night amid rumours he could announce tighter Covid-19 restrictions in England.

The prime minister will address the nation on Wednesday evening at Downing Street, where it is expected he will announce whether the UK government will introduce new restrictions aimed at curbing rising cases of the new Omicron coronavirus variant.

It comes as the fallout from the allegations a Christmas gathering was held by ministers and Number 10 officials last December, after the UK had entered restrictions following rising cases of the virus, continues.

Here's what you need to know about tonight's press conference.

What time is it on and how can I watch it?

Mr Johnson is expected to address the nation at 6pm on Wednesday evening. The conference will be broadcast on all major news channels including the BBC and Sky News, as well as online on the likes of iPlayer.

What will be announced?

It is not known whether or not the Prime Minister will announce further measures aimed at curbing the rising number of Omicron Covid-19 cases in the UK.

The UK government, as well as devolved nations' governments elswhere, have expressed concern in the past two weeks over the threat of the new variant amid fears it could be more transmissable and may be some way resistant to existing coronavirus vaccines.

While information on the variant is still being discovered, governments have boosted the rollout of its Covid booster programme and reiterated the importance of people getting their jab when they are offered it.

The Financial Times reported on Wednesday morning that the Prime Minister was set to announce new Covid restrictions, but nothing has been confirmed as of yet.

It has been rumoured that the UK government could announce new Plan B measures, which may include asking people in England to work from home again where possible, as well as rolling out vaccine passports in more settings such as for larger events.

Masks could also become mandatory in pubs and restaurants again.

It is not clear whether any new restrictions would come into place immediately or if there would be certain factors which could trigger them in the coming days and weeks.

Would these restrictions apply in Wales?

No, new restrictions would only apply in England. The Welsh Government is expected to announce the result of its latest coronavirus restrictions review on Friday. Read more about what we can expect from that here.
