Boris Johnson is only interested in saving himself

When Boris Johnson is not hiding in a fridge or flying into a warzone to avoid the reality that he is out of excuses with his own party, he might turn his attention to the country’s needs.

Thanks to a decade of Tory austerity that strangled any growth out of the economy and left people with wages worse than they were before the banking crash, we are now facing a massive cost of living crisis.

The rise in wholesale gas prices being passed on with a hefty profit by the big energy companies is about to be met with rising inflation and tax rises.

Add to this the increasing cost of food in the shops and the dire warnings of food bank usage going through the roof begin to ring true.

The Tory government could do many things.

It could cut VAT on fuel bills or cancel its National Insurance tax rise or restore the £20 cut to Universal Credit.

But the Prime Minister and his cabinet are paralysed and obsessed with only one thing - how to get off the hook on the partygate scandal that had engulfed Boris Johnson’s Downing Street.

When focus is needed, he is flannelling, When answers are demanded, he is on the run from his responsibilities.

When ordinary people are worried about their food and energy bills, Boris Johnson is only worried about saving his own skin.

Let's hold urgent summit on booze

Setting a minimum unit price for alcohol has been a flagship policy of the Scottish Government.

It was also passed in the teeth of a hugely protracted court battle with the booze industry.

However, new figures show there is no silver bullet that will solve the problem of alcohol abuse.

There were more than 35,000 booze-related hospital admissions last year.

People in deprived areas were seven times more likely to be admitted than those in wealthier postcodes.

Holyrood has passed ground-breaking public health laws since 1999 but this inequality is shameful.

Many Scots continue to have a problematic relationship with alcohol and complacency could undo the modest progress made so far.

The Scottish Government must convene an urgent summit of experts and people with lived experiences to come up with a way forward.

Radical solutions are required - and nothing should be off the table.
