Boris Johnson is missing in action and is not up to job as Prime Minister

As the Omicron variant gains a grip over the country and thousands have been storm-battered and left without power, the Prime Minister has failed again to take responsibility as chaos reigns at the heart of his government.

He’s a Prime Minister missing in action.

Busy covering up for boozy parties at Downing Street, spending his days trying to keep his head above water, at the expense of delivering for the public, Boris Johnson ’s jokes are just not funny anymore.

This is more than an absence of leadership, it’s a threat to public health.

On Wednesday, not a single minister would be appear on TV or radio, too ashamed to defend his behaviour.

His ministers knew they couldn’t defend the indefensible, and the result was denying people a vital update on Omicron.

Let’s think about this for a moment; because the leader of the UK doesn’t think the rules apply to him, public health information wasn’t delivered during a crisis.

The image of Her Majesty the Queen, sat alone, at Prince Philip’s funeral, plays on my mind.

She mourned for her husband of 73 years, whilst following the rules. The contrast to the Prime Minister couldn’t be starker.

Boris Johnson’s repeated denials won’t wash – we all know what happened and the public are not fools.

They made difficult decisions, some which they will carry with them for the rest of their lives, but they did the right thing, and they did what they were told to do keep everyone safe.

We all expected the government would do the same.

The Cabinet Secretary will now be investigating the parties at Downing Street last Christmas. What a waste of time. What a farce. The Prime Minister could end this charade today, by simply respecting the public, and coming clean.

This is the focus of his government at a time when we’re all being asked to follow more stringent Covid rules.

But Boris Johnson’s moral authority is in tatters. He’s hollowed-out public trust and confidence, and in doing so, has made our fight against Covid so much harder.

At times of national crisis – we need real leadership. But the government’s leadership has been at best shambolic and at worst corrupt over these last few weeks.

Whilst people across Scotland followed incredibly strict rules through all the lockdowns, the Prime Minister ’s senior team sniggered about covering up their Christmas shindigs.

This scandal, for all the pain it has caused, has at least made one thing crystal clear – it isn’t just enough to oppose the Tories. They must be removed and replaced, and only Labour can do that.

People are beginning to see the Prime Minister for what he is. Yet his self-awareness remains non-existent as he lies, skirts the issues and bumbles on.

In serious times we need serious leadership, and it is clear that this Prime Minister isn’t up to the job.
