Boris Johnson congratulates Joe Biden and says he looks forward to 'strengthening' partnership

Boris Johnson said he has spoke to Joe Biden to congratulate the US president-elect on his victory over Donald Trump.

On Saturday, Mr Biden passed the threshold of 270 electoral college votes needed for victory in the presidential race after winning the state of Pennsylvania.

The 77-year-old Democratic candidate has had a long political career in Washington and spent two terms as vice president to Donald Trump’s predecessor Barack Obama.

The Prime Minister spoke to the Democrat today amid concerns the pair may not have a smooth relationship because of issues surrounding Brexit.

But Mr Johnson is understood to have spoken to the former vice-president for around 25 minutes this afternoon.

“I just spoke to @JoeBiden to congratulate him on his election,” the Prime Minister tweeted.

Adding: “I look forward to strengthening the partnership between our countries and to working with him on our shared priorities – from tackling climate change, to promoting democracy and building back better from the pandemic.”
