Boost for football fans with all remaining World Cup games shown on SBS

SBS has announced that the broadcaster will simulcast all remaining World Cup matches with Optus effective immediately.

Earlier this month, SBS stepped in to assist Optus in simulcasting all group stage matches after Optus encountered technical problems in delivering their live streaming service.

Optus made a sub-licensing deal with SBS in 2016 that allowed the telco to screen all 64 matches at Russia 2018, 39 of them exclusively.

SBS was scheduled to broadcast the other 25 free-to-air, including all Australia matches, the semi-finals and final, but now has access to all matches because of Optus's troubles.

Optus chief executive Allen Lew has been forced to repeatedly apologise after Optus's streaming service encountered problems during the early stages of the World Cup, with large numbers of viewers left watching an "error" screen instead of live football.

The problem was blamed on "unprecedented demand" for its service beyond its expectations.

The telco has since said that customers who paid $15 per month for the service will be refunded.

Experts told the ABC last month it would be unlikely that Optus would be able to fix the issue in time for the end of the group stage and suggested that SBS would have to take over the broadcasting of all remaining matches.

SBS were already scheduled to show four round of 16 matches, two quarter-finals, both semi-finals, the third place playoff and final but will now show all remaining matches.
