Boohoo hit with backlash after sharing photo of dozen white interns in diversity row

Boohoo has come under fire for a lack of diversity after sharing a photo of more than a dozen white interns.

The fashion brand, which also owns Pretty Little Thing, shared the image on its LinkedIn page, Boohoo Group PLC, six days ago.

Some shoppers called the post "disturbing" while others vowed to boycott the site.

In the LinkedIn post, Boohoo said: "Happy Friday. This week we welcomed our 28 interns to the Boohoo Group.

"Our new interns will be working across IT, Buying, Merchandising, E-commerce, Marketing, Design and Studio for a 12 month placement year.

"We can’t wait to see how they progress over the next year."

However, the post has not had the intended reaction, as people were quick to point out a lack of diversity among the interns.

"Nice to see the lack of diversity...," wrote one user.

"Completely agree, not sending a good message to people of colour who would be interested in working for Boohoo!," added someone else.

One person said a lack of representation 'isn't great' (Jam Press)

"It's nice to work somewhere alongside a mixture of people, including those who also look like you.. lack of representation isn't great."

"The lack of diversity is disturbing," wrote a third person.

"For a brand so ready to capitalise on Black culture, Black music, Black-influenced street culture / fashion and influential Black and bi-cultural women to sell your wares, you’re sending a very clear message on how much you actually value Black and bi-cultural women professionally," wrote a fourth user.

Some shoppers said they would not be buying from Boohoo again.

"Message received I will be shopping elsewhere lol," wrote one user.

"Wow! How does this even happen, has any thought gone into the hiring process?," added another person.

A third user wrote: "Clearly out of touch. No doubt people of colour make an impact on your bottom line, yet they are not represented in your 2021 internships. Your loss."

Another person appeared to be at a loss for words, simply writing: "wow wow WOW!!!!!!" [sic]

A fourth LinkedIn user wrote: "At this point, I know many employers are committed to this cookie-cutter standard.

"There's no way they couldn't find people outside of these identical octuplets for this internship; I want to stop living in perpetual side-eye, but I guess life isn't going to allow that for now."

However, not everyone agreed with the diversity issue, with some users congratulating Boohoo on the new hires.

"What a great looking team! All the best to them in the new venture," wrote one person.

Boohoo has been approached for comment.
