NARATHIWAT: Two policemen were killed and four others injured when a bomb exploded under a road in Chanae district of this southern province on Tuesday afternoon.

The attack occurred on a road in Ban Nam Won village in tambon Chang Phueak at 2.12pm, severely damaging one of two police trucks passing by. Six policemen from the Chanae station were injured at the scene and rushed to Chanae Hospital.

Two of them succumbed to their wounds later. They were Pol Lt Theerasak Khrueakham, a deputy inspector, and Pol Sgt Pariwat Udom.

The impact caused the truck to land about 40 metres away from the 1.5-metre-wide, one-metre-deep explosion crater. Police said the bomb was assembled in a cooking gas cylinder, was placed in a sewer pipe under the road and detonated by wire strung into a roadside forest.

The group of policemen was attacked as they were returning to their station from a case of unrest.
