Bomb squad in Leeds as homes evacuated after mortar shell discovered in basement of house

A number of homes in Stanningley were evacuated after a mortar shell was discovered in the basement of a house.

Emergency services arrived at Westbourne Place near Pudsey after it was reported that a suspected mortar shell was found at 7.53am this morning (Friday).

West Yorkshire Police have now confirmed that the shell is "not a viable device" and has been safely removed.

A number of nearby properties were evacuated and a police cordon was established. Road closures were also in place on Bradford Road between West Grove Street and Richardshaw Lane while enquiries were carried out. The Army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team attended to assess the object.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: "It has been established that the Mortar shell is not a viable device and has been safely removed. There is no risk to the public and the road is now reopened."
