Bomb squad called to Newcastle flats following discovery of suspicious device

A suspicious device which sparked police and a bomb squad to descend on a block of flats in Newcastle has been recovered.

Police were called to Alnham Court, Fawdon, at around midday on Friday following reports of the discovery of a suspected mortar.

Officers taped off the area as a bomb disposal unit arrived to carry out tests on the package.

Residents gathered outside the cordon as speculation built on its contents.

One man said: "When I pulled up I spoke to police who said there was a bomb.

"I knew it can't have been. They would never have been going so close to it if it was and they'd have evacuated the flats."

Police later confirmed there was no threat to the wider public and disposed of the device.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "At 11.53am today, we received a report of a suspected mortar outside an address in Alnham Court, Fawdon.

"Officers attended and a bomb disposal team were called as a precaution.

"A cordon was in place as experts ensured the safety of the device."

The cordon was lifted at 3pm with police and bomb disposal unit leaving the scene shortly after.
