Bomb squad and police cordoned off road after grenade found in garden

Police and a bomb squad closed a Stoke Gifford road after a woman found a hand grenade in her yard.

An Avon and Somerset police spokesman confirmed officers were called to Harry Stoke Road at about 4.50pm yesterday (Saturday, September 19).

He said a resident unearthed what is believed to have been an "old hand grenade" while gardening yesterday morning.

"Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) was informed and advised a 20m cordon was put in place purely as a precaution," he added.

"Nobody was evacuated. The device was moved to a safe location and a controlled detonation was carried out today."

One witness posted on Twitter about being unable to drive down Harry Stoke Road at 11.12pm yesterday, after the route was cordoned off.
