Bolton Wanderers have joined Bury FC in facing the risk of EFL expulsion on, with the two clubs issued with a 5pm deadline on Tuesday, August 27.
Wanderers, like Bury, started the season on -12 points but have been able to play matches this season, although their midweek tie with Doncaster was postponed due to concerns about players' welfare.
Bolton returned to action on Saturday, losing 5-0 at the hands of Ipswich Town, and the EFL are frustrated with the lack of progress regarding a takeover and will now consider removing Bolton from League One.
Should a resolution not be forthcoming, the withdrawal notice issued in May would be lifted and the club would have 14 days to resolve the takeover situation before being removed from the EFL.
That situation differs slightly from Bury, who saw their 14-day window expire on Friday evening but were issued with an extension after significant progress regarding a takeover was made.
"The current situation cannot continue and the time to resolve the current impasse is now fast running out," an EFL statement read.
"Whilst it is understood as recently as yesterday that the parties were once again in a position to complete the formalities, there appears to be additional frustrating delays that are only serving to have a negative and detrimental impact.
"If a successful conclusion to a sale is not found or there are no credible plans for the club to continue the season in administration by the planned board meeting at 5pm on Tuesday 27 August 2019, then the EFL Board will consider lifting the suspension on the Notice of Withdrawal of the club’s membership of the league which was issued when the club entered into administration in May 2019."
