Bolton Wanderers complete Eoin Toal transfer from Derry City & confirm contract length

Bolton Wanderers have confirmed Derry City defender Eoin Toal as the club's fourth signing this summer.

The 23-year-old centre half has been a target Wanderers have turned their attentions to to bolster their options in the heart of defence. Ian Evatt's side have made three signings so far this summer

Toal has made more than 150 appearances for Derry and scored six goals, with his contract at the Candystripes expiring later this year. This season, he has turned out 20 times in the League of Ireland Premier Division and scored once.

The Whites had a bid turned down for the defender earlier this summer for a player they wanted to sign. However, Wanderers were successful with a second approach for the former Northern Ireland under-21 international and was understood to be having a medical earlier this week.

He has now been confirmed as the fourth signing made this summer for the club's first team and has put pen to paper on a three-year-deal at the University of Bolton Stadium and joins for an undisclosed fee. He joins Jack Iredale as a permanent acquisition made this summer, along with Manchester City and Liverpool loanees James Trafford and Conor Bradley.

Wanderers boss Ian Evatt said: "It’s been well documented how in-depth we are with our recruitment process and how we identity position specifics in players and if their attributes fit how we want them to play.

“Eoin ticks all of those boxes. He’s a young player with a huge amount of experience – albeit in a different division; captain of a top-division team in Ireland, who has played European football and who has vast attributes we feel we can improve on.

“We know he’s got good versatility and as coaches we feel we can still improve him and he will get time to settle.

“There’s no pressure on him to hit the ground running. It’s really a bigger project for us but we’re delighted to get it done and we think we’ve got a good one.”
