Bolton boy, 8, wins award from Boris Johnson after writing book in lockdown

An eight-year-old has been recognised by the Prime Minister after writing and self-publishing his own book.

Bolton School Junior Boys pupil Milan Kumar was inspired to write a book after completing a lockdown challenge in spring, to read 50 books over three months

The Lostock youngster spent the following weeks and months writing a book of his own, titled Covid Christmas Parade, about a young boy spreading festive cheer during the pandemic.

Money from sales of the book is being donated to the National Literacy Trust, to help support other children whose literacy and learning have been most affected by Covid-19.

Milan also raised money for the charity in the summer by cycling 50 laps a day, for 10 days, around the University of Bolton Stadium.

As well as being praised by the patron of the National Literacy Trust - Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall - Milan has now received a Points of Light award from Boris Johnson.

Milan said: "I am greatly honoured that the Prime Minister has recognised my fundraising efforts for the National Literacy Trust.

"My newly published children’s book on Amazon called ‘Covid Christmas Parade’ is all about a young boy who is determined to bring back his town’s Christmas cheer in light of the pandemic.

"I feel proud knowing I have made a difference to the lives of other children affected by Covid-19 because reading promotes health and wellbeing. I love reading and learning about the world through books and I want to help as many children as possible discover the magic of reading and all the great benefits it comes with."

The Points of Light awards are given to outstanding individual volunteers, who are making a change in their community.
