Boli Bolingoli set for Celtic return after Istanbul Basaksehir reject chance to sign left-back

Boli Bolingoli could be set for an unlikely second chance in the Scottish Premiership with Celtic after Istanbul Basaksehir rejected the opportunity to sign the left-back on a permanent basis.

The 25-year-old Belgian arrived at Celtic Park in the summer of 2019 as a potential replacement for the outgoing Kieran Tierney, with the pacy defender costing a rumoured fee in the region of £2million.

However, his career in Scotland never really got off the ground, after a string of underwhelming displays were followed by the defender being sent on-loan to Turkey after breaking severe Coronavirus restrictions during the height of the pandemic.

During his time in Istanbul, Bolingoli played Champions League football against the likes of Manchester United and RB Leipzig, but it seems he hasn't done enough to impress the Basaksehir hierarchy into forking out a transfer fee.

He played 18 times in the Turkish Super Lig but a statement on the Basaksehir website earlier today read: "The contract of Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo, who played successfully for one season under our orange-dark blue jersey, has expired.

"Our club has decided not to exercise the purchase option in the rental agreement with Celtic FC.

"We thank Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo for his efforts for our club and wish him success for the rest of his career."

It now remains to be seen whether or not Bolingoli can rebuild his career, and reputation at Parkhead under Ange Postecoglou, with Greg Taylor currently the club's only recognised senior left-back.
