Body found in search for 21-year-old who went missing at Clacton Pier during heatwave

A body has been found in the search for a 21-year-old who went missing at popular pier during the heatwave.

The young man disappeared after getting into difficulties in the water.

Emergency services and the coastguard were called to the beach seafront on Tuesday after a 'serious' incident was reported with six people struggling in the sea near Clacton Pier.

EssexLive reported four males and a female were taken to Colchester General Hospital for further assessment and care. They have since been discharged.

A 21-year-old man remained missing and coastguard searches continued until earlier this morning, when a body was found in the village of Jaywick.

Formal identification has yet to take place, but Essex Police are working with their international partners to contact the 21-year-old's next of kin.

A spokesperson for Essex Police said: "Emergency services involved in the search for a man who was last seen in the water close to #Clacton Pier have this AM located a body of a man in #Jaywick.

"Formal ID has not yet taken place. We're liaising with international partners to contact the family of the 21-year-old."

East of England Ambulance Service said at the time of the incident emergency workers were sent to the location.

A spokesman said: "A large response, including four ambulances, our hazardous area response team and the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance, was sent to Clacton Beach this morning following reports of a number of people in difficulty in the water.

"Crews assessed four males and a female patient at the scene before transporting them by road to Colchester Hospital for further assessment and care."

The Mirror reported on Tuesday how Essex Police confirmed they were dealing with an "incident" with "significant emergency services" present.

Lifeboat crews were deployed and an air ambulance joined the rescue attempt.

The police said at the time: "We're on the scene assisting emergency services colleagues with a serious and ongoing incident close to Clacton Pier.

"There is a significant emergency services presence in the area while the incident is being dealt with. We'll provide an update as soon as we practically can."

East of England Ambulance Service then issued a statement confirming one male was still missing on what was the hottest day on record as temperatures reached 40C.

A spokesman said: "There is a significant emergency services presence in the area while the incident is being dealt with. We'll provide an update as soon as we practically can."

"Clacton Pier has closed and members of the public enjoying the hot weather have been asked to leave."
