Man found dead in clothing bin - as witness warns 'something bad has happened'

A man has been found dead inside a clothing recycling bin by a shocked member of the public.

Residents have been left reeling after police and paramedics descended on the quiet village hall in Scalby, Scarborough shortly after 6am before they confirmed the grim discovery at 9.45am.

Officers say his family have been informed.

One local resident was shocked to discover the area crawling with police earlier this morning. "Something bad has happened," she said. "Scalby tennis courts has police all over and is taped off. CSI at scene. Bit too close for comfort that."

She added: "My husband drove past on way to work around 6.15am and saw police there and an ambulance driving away. The entire area from the village hall and tennis courts was taped off."

Another local tweeted: "Whatever the circumstances, terrible for all those concerned.

"Scalby is a beautiful little village just up the road from me and this is really not something you'd expect there.

"May the poor person now rest in peace."

Police say that while they continue to investigate, they are not treating the discovery as suspicious.

A North Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "The scene in Scalby, Scarborough where a man’s body was found in a clothing recycling bin early this morning, has now been closed down.

"There are no suspicious circumstances around the man’s death and a file has been passed to the coroner.

"The man’s family have been made aware and are being supported by officers."

In an earlier statement this morning, they said: "Police, Fire and Ambulance services attended and are currently at the scene.

"Enquiries are ongoing, but officers do not believe there are any suspicious circumstances around the incident."

In February last year the body of a man was discovered in a bin outside a block of flats in East London.

Residents reported that a man was unresponsive in the bin area in Whitechapel, shortly after 10am.

Metropolitan Police officers and response crews from the London Ambulance Service rushed to the scene where they found a 55-year-old man.
