Bobby Duncan strikes as Liverpool refuse to give up on Premier League title fight

Bobby Duncan struck a stunning winner to ensure Liverpool under-18s maintained their slim hopes of title glory.

Duncan's 29th goal of season ultimately proved the difference as the Reds earned a narrow 2-1 triumph over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Kirkby on Saturday afternoon.

With leaders Derby County thrashing West Bromwich Albion 5-0, Barry Lewtas's side remain two points adrift in second place in Premier League U18 North.

However, with the Reds having only two games remaining and Derby having a game in hand, the U18s are running out of time to overhaul the Rams.

Liverpool were made to work hard for the points against Wolves, who had won only three of their previous 16 games.

After a goalless first half, it required an outstanding curling first-time effort from Jake Cain into the top corner to open the scoring eight minutes after the interval.

The Reds remained in control and doubled their advantage four minutes from time when Duncan lifted a finish over the Wolves goalkeeper having been released by Rhys Williams.

And that goal proved crucial as, moments later, Taylor Perry ensured a nervy finale by pulling a goal back for the visitors.

Liverpool U18s will now travel to the United States next week to take part in the prestigious Dallas Cup for the first time since winning the Super Group title in 2008.

In their qualifying group in the 12-team competition, they have been drawn alongside Tigres of Mexico, Ikapa Sporting of South Africa and New York City.

The group winners qualify for the semi-finals along with the best runner-up.
