Bobby Davro diagnosed with prostate cancer after symptom showed 'something wasn't right'

Comedy legend Bobby Davro has revealed he has prostate cancer.

The former EastEnders star - whose fiancee died of cancer in 2023 - explained on ITV’s This Morning on Tuesday that he was diagnosed with the disease after realising “something wasn’t right”.

The TV favourite – who rose to fame in the 1980s – told hosts Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard that he went for a PSA test which led to his diagnosis and urged other men to get checked.

"I think one in eight men get it. Coming in today, the man that picked me up in the car from Waterloo - he had it,” he said.

"I think a lot of men of colour, they get more prostate cancer, so it's got to be checked. Get your PSA checked and have your prostate examined. My doctor told me mine was a bit swollen so I had the PSA test and it was 24, which wasn't good at all.

"The NHS have been fantastic and a couple of days later, they gave me a biopsy to check out where it is and it was intermediate.”

He said he was “grateful” when doctors told him it “wasn’t terminal”.

"I asked the urologist if it's terminal, because that's the first thing you think of and he said no, I will be buying Christmas presents for many years to come,” he recalled.

“That made me cry because it was such a relief. It’s scary.”

Asked by Deeley if he had any symptoms, he said "Not really. The only thing I had was erectile dysfunction. I can say that can't I? It wasn't nice and it might have had something to do with the woman I...”

He added jokingly, "I used to take one every night when I was in bed. Not to have sex. It stops me rolling out the bed...” prompting Shephard to laugh.

The actor went on: “Sorry, I've got to put a few gags in. Anyway, I realised that something wasn't quite right. I was struggling a bit in that department."

Shephard said: "The good news is, he's got this diagnosis but Bobby is still very much Bobby. As he says, 'you've got to laugh to live.’”

Dr Zoe Williams, who had also joined Davro on the sofa, explained that erectile dysfunction “can be a symptom” or prostate cancer.

She added: “The commonest symptom is difficulty passing urine, poor flow, difficulty ending, or feeling like your bladder isn't fully empty.”

Davro’s latest health issues come two years after he had a minor stroke.

The stand-up star was taken to hospital after collapsing at a show in London on March 2024, an incident he described as a “funny turn”.

A source told The Sun at the time: “His condition has greatly improved and he’s now resting at home.

“Clearly he’s feeling much better as Bobby described his proximity to the hospital and the excellent care he received there as ‘a real stroke of luck’.”

In 2023, his fiancee Vicky Wright died aged 63 of pancreatic cancer.

The comic proposed the day before she started chemotherapy and even got his friend, Sir Cliff Richard, involved in the gesture by getting him to send her a video message featuring his 1968 song, Congratulations.

“I have to forgive the universe for taking her away from me, but the engagement was one of the best days of her life,” he said at the time.

“The fact that I hadn’t proposed caused us problems. So people said to me, ‘You’re only doing it for her’.

“But I was doing it for both of us. She was the love of my life. I could never have lived with myself if I hadn’t.”

He was previously married to Trudi Jameson for 10 years until 2003.
