Bob Marley biopic dominates holiday box office, exceeds expectations

Paramount's biopic 'Bob Marley: One Love' has been dominating the box office, pulling in $25.3 million domestically as of Friday. The film, which opened on Valentine's Day, tells the story of reggae legend Bob Marley's life and musical journey. Despite receiving mixed reviews, it has resonated with audiences and received an 'A' grade from Cinema Score. Starring Kingsley Ben-Adir as Bob Marley and Lashana Lynch as Rita Marley, the film explores Marley's European and African tours and the making of his iconic album 'Exodus.'

On the other hand, Sony's superhero film 'Madame Web' hasn't fared as well, earning $12.5 million domestically since its release. The movie, starring Dakota Johnson and directed by S.J. Clarkson, tells the story of a paramedic with clairvoyant abilities who protects teenagers from a killer. Despite having a production budget of $80 million, 'Madame Web' has faced harsh criticism and lackluster audience response, potentially jeopardizing its future as a franchise starter.

Meanwhile, 'Argylle' and 'Migration' are also holding their own at the box office, with the former projected to see a 32% drop in its third weekend and the latter expected to reach $116 million domestically through Presidents' Day. The Apple Studios production 'Argylle,' with a budget exceeding $200 million, has been deemed a disappointment in terms of financial return.

In the coming weeks, theaters will welcome the highly anticipated 'Kung Fu Panda 4' for family audiences set to release on March 8. Additionally, the faith-based TV series 'The Chosen' may impact the rankings, possibly pushing 'Wonka' out of the top five in its 10th weekend of release. 'Wonka,' starring Timothée Chalamet, continues to attract audiences in the current quiet market, with expectations of adding another $4 million during the forthcoming holiday weekend. Its domestic total is on track to surpass 'Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania' to become the seventh-highest-grossing North American release of 2023, nearing the $210 million mark.
