Eight missing after boat carrying migrants sinks off Turkey

Eight people remain missing after a boat carrying migrants and refugees sank off southwest Turkey, the Turkish defence ministry has said, with search and rescue efforts ongoing.

Thirty-seven people were rescued from the vessel, the ministry said in a statement on Friday, which sank some 259km (161 miles) southwest of the Turkish resort town of Kas late on Thursday.

Turkish naval ships and an aircraft were involved in the search and rescue operation, the statement added.

There was no immediate information on the nationalities of those involved.
