BMW driver hits 140mph on motorway in latest lockdown speeding surge on our roads

A BMW driver was pulled over by police after reaching a speed of 140mph - one of a series of incidents in recent days of people using the region's roads and motorways as racetracks.

On Saturday, officers stopped the motorist was recorded doing DOUBLE the permitted motorway limit down the M62.

It was brought to a halt as it approached the junction with the M6, at Junction 10, in Warrington.

In other incidents of alleged crimes on our roads, a chase took place on Sunday evening, which started on the M56 motorway, and ended on the M53 in Wirral.

The driver was detained at Junction 4, near Clatterbridge.

In another case over the weekend, a car was found flipped over onto its roof with a massive amount of damage caused to the vehicle.

Police suspect the motorist was over the limit for alcohol and had been speeding.

On Thursday, more than 50 drivers were stopped on Liverpool's major roads during a police "day of action."

It led to a number of arrests being made and stolen cars recovered, as well as upwards of 20 driving offences being reported.

The operation was carried out in areas where the public had raised concerns about motorists speeding.

Liverpool Targeted Policing Inspector Leigh Price said: "Our officers are out policing the roads of Merseyside every single day of the year, but this operation was about focusing our activity in specific areas people have told us they have concerns about.

"It is in everyone's interests to keep our roads safe.

"The drivers themselves, other road users and pedestrians will all be a lot safer if those who drive dangerously, at speed, or under the influence of drink and drugs are subject to enforcement.

"This activity gave us an opportunity to educate drivers about the risks they posed to themselves and others by driving too fast, without their seat belt and while on their phone, as well as those who drove without insurance or in a car with a valid MOT certificate.

“With restrictions on travel having eased, our roads are busier now then they have been for several months and it is imperative that those taking to the roads again are responsible, and drive safely."
