Blues top Coyotes in shootout, 3-2

ST. LOUIS _ It took a shootout, but the Blues were able to pick up two points with a 3-2 victory over the stubborn Arizona Coyotes before 18,156 at Scottrade Center.

Brayden Schenn and Alexander Steen scored for the Blues in the shootout, sandwiched around a miss by Vladimir Tarasenko. Meanwhile, goalie Carter Hutton stopped shots by Clayton Keller and Derk Stepan.

At 13-3-1 the Blues continue to lead the Western Conference with 27 points.

The Blues' Alex Pietrangelo evened things up at 2 in regulation when he took a pass from Tarasenko in the high slot and blasted a shot past Coyotes goalie Antti Raanta for his seventh of the year at the 5:01 mark of the third. It was the 19th goal scored by a Blues defenseman in 17 games this season.

The Blues got on the board first, in the second period, when Joel Edmundson took a pass from Chris Thorburn on the doorstep and beat Raanta for his fifth goal of the year at 5:14 of the second. Edmundson had only four career goals entering this, his third NHL season.

For Thorburn, signed as a free agent July 1 after spending the past six seasons in Winnipeg, it was his first assist _ and first point _ with the Blues.

But Arizona tied the game 4 { minutes later on a Brendan Perlini goal, and then took a 2-1 lead at the 18:41 mark when Perlini scored again.
