Blue Origin: Tom Hanks turned down an offer by Jeff Bezos to go to space

Tom Hanks turned down an offer by Jeff Bezos to go to space, the Hollywood actor has said.

Mr Hanks, 65, confirmed reports that he was asked to travel on the Amazon founder’s Blue Origin space flight before Star Trek actor William Shatner - but said he turned it down because of the price.

He made the comments while making an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to talk about his new film Finch.

When asked whether it was true that he had been asked to go to space by Jeff Bezos before William Shatner, Mr Hanks said: “Well yeah, provided I pay.

“It costs like 28 million bucks or something like that.

“I’m doing good Jimmy, I’m doing good, but I ain’t paying 28 million bucks”.

He then joked that he could have the same experience without paying and simulated travelling on a space rocket for the audience.

The star added: “I do not need to spend 28 million bucks to do that.”

Last month, Star Trek actor William Shatner has become the oldest person to reach space, calling his trip “the most profound experience”.

The 90-year-old blasted off from Texas on a Blue Origin rocket - the space company owned by Mr Bezos.

Mr Shatner, who played Captain Kirk in the original Star Trek series, spent 10 minutes on his suborbital flight alongside three others.
