Blood Orange review – erotic thriller with Iggy Pop

From Stooge to screen … Iggy Pop in Blood Orange
From Stooge to screen … Iggy Pop in Blood Orange

After Iggy Pop’s triumphant gigs in London last month, the mania continues with this curio, an erotic thriller, featuring him in his first leading role. If you’re the sort of person who can never get enough of this wonderfully grizzled, whip-lean 69-year-old’s naked torso, this will hold you over, at least until Gimme Danger, the Jim Jarmusch-directed documentary about Pop gets its UK release. Unfortunately, it also demonstrates his pronounced limitations as an actor, even when playing a variant on himself. Pop’s Bill is an ageing rock star, twisted with spinal trouble and nearly blind, but seemingly happily married to sexy widow Isabelle, played by Kacey Clarke. Free spirit that he is, Bill doesn’t mind if Isabelle occasionally bangs the gardener (Antonio Magro). But when Isabelle’s erstwhile stepson (Ben Lamb) shows up in search of his share of his late father’s inheritance, the atmosphere sours. It’s all rather forgettable, but at least it makes you appreciate just how great Pop is in those insurance adverts by comparison.
