Blistering heat broils Prayagraj, no respite in sight

PRAYAGRAJ: The excruciating summer heat continued to torment people on Saturday, with the maximum temperature settling at 46.1 degrees Celsius. Though the mercury came down a bit from Friday’s high of 46.6 degrees Celsius, it was still six notches above the normal.

Even the minimum temperature of 25.8 degrees was one notch above normal. The stifling heatwave that is showing no signs of relenting has been keeping the residents indoors. With Eid round the corner, business is suffering as prominent markets wear a deserted look during the day and only those with urgent need venture out.

“We cannot even imagine going out for shopping in the day during the ongoing month of Ramzan. We only go out after 8pm when it cools down a bit,” said Nasreen Fatima, a resident of Atala.

The unrelenting heat surge has forced the parents not to let their kids go outdoors. “Earlier we used to play till 10am, but nowadays we are warned to return by 8am,” said Swarnim, a class 7 student.

Meanwhile, there is no respite in sight soon as weather experts have predicted that the mercury would continue to hover above 45 degrees Celsius.

“The weather would remain the same in the coming days and the temperature will hover around 45-46 degrees,” said Prof AR Siddiqui of the department of geography, Allahabad University. Although the city would be hit by dust storms, heat will continue to torment till pre-monsoon showers, he added.
