Blantyre Vics target Rossvale win as West of Scotland League measuring stick

Blantyre Vics boss John Gibson reckons he will know where his side stand in the West of Scotland League Premier Division after their clash with Rossvale this weekend.

The Vics will look to bounce back from their last league outing where they lost 4-0 to title hopefuls Darvel at New Tinto Park.

With David Gormley’s side finishing in the top half of the old West Region top flight, Gibson believes they will act as a yardstick for his players going forward this term.

He said: “We expect it to be a difficult one. They did well in this league last season and finished in the top half.

“The league finished early obviously but they had still done well.

“They have good experience in that league and their manager David has come in and done well for them.

“Darvel are a team that will probably be at the top of the league, and to be honest these aren’t the games that will decide where you end up in the league.

“Rossvale will be about mid-table and it lets us know where we are in the league.”

Last weekend the Vics earned their spot in the next round of the South Challenge Cup with a dramatic 5-4 extra time win over Edinburgh South.

Gibson added: “The pitch was a bit cut up and they battled away. They were well up for a cup tie and it was a really hard game.

“We were glad to get into the next round after a bit of an epic game.”
