Blackhawks drop home opener to Maple Leafs 7-6 in OT despite Patrick Kane's late heroics

CHICAGO _ Morgan Rielly's overtime goal lifted the Maple Leafs to a wild 7-6 victory Sunday night, ruining the Blackhawks' home opener at the United Center.

Patrick Kane scored a pair of late third-period goals to tie it twice, including the final one with 29 seconds left in the game.

On a night honoring the legendary Stan Mikita, a one-time center and Blackhawks captain who died Aug. 7, current captain and center Jonathan Toews scored for the third straight game to give him five on the season.

The Hawks built a 2-0 lead on goals by Toews and Alex DeBrincat, but the Leafs roared back to take a 3-2 lead after the first period. The teams traded goals until Tavares' third of the night with 10 minutes, 31 seconds left in the third made it 6-5 before Kane tied it late.

The Hawks dropped to 2-0-1 on the season.
