Black woman voices fury over young daughter's racist birthday card

A black woman has spoken on her heartache after her young daughter was given a racist birthday card by a guest at her party.

Shavonya Poole, 34, says she is still angry after the girl was called a "gorilla" by a friend a few years ago.

The woman, from Florida, US, took to TikTok to recall the devastating moment her eldest child, Zuri, opened her card.

Reading the message out loud, the girl says what is written inside her greeting.

“Happy birthday, Zuri," she starts. ".....Gorillas rock.”

There were drawings of what appeared to be gorillas on the front of the homemade card, and inside it, as she showed the camera.

She said: "I'm still trying to figure out why these racist people sent their daughter to my kid's party?" the mum captioned the footage.

The footage has been viewed more than 256,000 times on TikTok (TIKTOK)

She said she talked to Zuri about racism straight away and ended her daughter's friendship with the other girl.

The footage has been viewed more than 256,000 times on the video-sharing platform.

The mum quickly stated that gorillas had nothing to do with her daughter's birthday celebration.

The parent explained to her followers that oblivious Zuri didn't realise the birthday message contained a racial slur.

"Did you hear the little girl laughing?" she asked. "My baby didn’t get it."

Shavonya went on: "Like for real though, gorillas rock that wasn’t even her birthday theme.

"What’s sad is these same people invited my daughter to their house for a sleepover. You think I sent her...hell nawl."

"Who even drew this? Was it the kid, the mom, the dad, or a sibling?" she asked.

"It’s people like this that keep racism alive in this day and age."

Many people shared the mum's outrage over the card and said they felt devastated for Zuri - as well as her family.

One wrote: "Wow I would have called that child's parents so damn quick."

Another TikToker wrote: "'The way my anger set up I would’ve been in jail."

The mum says she decided to be the "bigger person" and opted against confronting the child's parents, she said.

But people say they had questions to answer regarding the card.

One commented: "That child didn't write that on there without the parent's influence. I would've been so angry. How do you even explain that kind of hate?"

"I wonder if the little girl giving it realised what it meant," reasoned another.
