Black Lives Matter Belfast protest sees huge crowd gather at Belfast City Hall

Massive crowds gathered today for a protest outside City Hall in Belfast in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter campaign.

The protest follows the death of George Floyd in the US last month.

The 46-year-old black man died whilst being restrained by police in Minneapolis, America as he pleaded "Please, please, please, I can’t breathe."

A video circulating on social media of the incident has sparked outrage across the world.

Organisers of the event in Belfast urged protesters to be socially-distanced and to bring face masks and sanitizer in order for safety measures to be adhered to.

Thousands were chanting 'no peace, no justice'. Crowds were then seen on their knees while applauding which was followed by silence as a mark of respect.

Belfast Alliance Cllr Michael Long said he understood the protest and solidarity following the death of Mr Floyd but added he couldn't understand the rally being held where social distancing wasn't possible.

He tweeted: "Whilst I totally understand the desire to protest against the death of George Floyd, I really cant understand a rally being held at City Hall where social distancing is impossible in the midst of the COVID crisis. Must be better ways to express solidarity."

Diversions in the vicinity of City Hall may still be in place.
