Black Eye Friday mayhem as Christmas boozers brawl in Newcastle city centre

A fight broke out as revellers partied in Newcastle City Centre on Black Eye Friday.

Partygoers were out for a good time on the last Friday before Christmas but, with the new Omicron variant of Covid on the rise, the city centre was quieter than usual.

Many chose to stay away from the hustle and bustle of the Toon, and the usually hectic city centre streets were not so lively.

However, a brawl reportedly broke out on Grainger Street as celebrations escalated into violence.

A number of people are thought to have been involved in the incident.

And, as these pictures show, two men appeared to be fighting, with one seen kicking the other as he lay on the ground.

One of the men was later seen with blood on his face and clothes.

Police officers arrived at the scene to break up the fight. Northumbria Police have been contacted for comment.

The incident came amid reports the Government may be planning a 'two-week circuit breaker lockdown' after Christmas.

Indoor mixing could once again be banned in a desperate bid to slow Omicron, it has been claimed.

And pubs and restaurants may once again be asked to serve customers outdoors.

It comes as the UK recorded a record number of Covid cases for the third day in a row, with 93,045 confirmed infections in just 24 hours.

The "rule of six" rule would be reintroduced for outdoor meetings, while shielding would return to protect the most vulnerable, according to the reports.
