Birds of a feather battle on together

Bird's Eye-View: A white-bellied sea eagle and an osprey clashed in the west Lake Macquarie sky. Picture: Rick Gatenby

Rick Gatenby was at Eraring Power Station canal at the weekend when he spotted a clash in the sky above.

A white-bellied sea eagle and an osprey traded blows momentarily.

Rick managed to fire off a few shots to capture the scrap in all its glory.

"I was at Eraring trying to photograph diving terns when I heard a squawk, looked up and just got the three shots," said Rick, who posted the images on the Birds of the Hunter and Central Coast NSW Facebook page.

"No feathers flying, it was over in seconds and each went their separate way."

Rick has seen this kind of clash a few times in recent years, but this was the first time he captured it on camera.

All Aboard

The wheels on the bus go round and round, round and round, round and round.

If this nursery rhyme makes you want to be a bus driver, you're in luck.

Keolis Downer, the operator of Newcastle Transport, is looking for people with "a genuine interest and 'drive' [decent pun, that] to provide fantastic customer service to their customers".

Keolis Downer Hunter general manager Mark Dunlop said being a professional bus operator "involves a lot more than driving".

"We are looking for people who are hard workers and have a positive attitude. No experience is necessary. We will provide you with the comprehensive training you need to become a professional bus driver, including safety, customer service and operating buses.

"If you are motivated, friendly and reliable, we want to hear from you."

Maicon Felipe Flores de Carvalho joined the company as a bus driver around a year ago. It was a complete lifestyle change from his previous job as a labourer and he hasn't looked back.

"My grandfather was a bus driver and I wanted to follow in his footsteps, so I'm glad I made the change," he said.

"It is very rewarding work being involved in the daily life of the local community and connecting people where they need to go."

There are multiple vacancies available across Keolis Downer Hunter, based out of Hamilton and Belmont bus depots. To apply, visit newcastletransport.info/contact-us/careers/

Other Side of the Coin

Australia Post is celebrating iconic and admired symbols of Australian life with a new collection of $1 coins.

The collectables program - dubbed the Great Aussie Coin Hunt 2 - will no doubt attract coin enthusiasts from across the great southern land.

The coins, produced in partnership with the Royal Australian Mint, feature an Aussie icon for each letter of the alphabet.

These include A for akubra, B for BBQ, C for Cherry Ripe, D for dingo, E for emu, H for Home and Away, I for ironbark, M for Milo, P for pavlova, S for Sydney Harbour Bridge, T for Tim Tam, V for Victa Lawnmower, Z for zinc sunscreen.

Australia Post's Nicole Sheffield said the coin hunt would create "a sense of fun and excitement with a touch of nostalgia, as people reflect on their connection to the quintessentially Australian themes".

"This year, we are releasing the full alphabet from the start of the hunt, but they will be in limited supply so we encourage those who want the full set to get in quickly to secure their collection of great Aussie memorabilia."

There was no word on whether Australia Post will be releasing a collectable watch set.
