Bipartisan gridlock hinders progress on border and Ukraine aid

Jeff Merkley emphasizes the complexity of negotiations on the border funding bill.

In a recent interview with a Democratic Senator from Oregon, it was revealed that there is little chance of a vote on the border issue this week. Senator Jeff Merkley acknowledged the complexities involved in reaching an agreement on the border and emphasized that there is currently no significant overlap of agreement between the two parties. He also highlighted the fact that many Republicans have not even bothered to return to Washington, D.C., further indicating a lack of confidence in the negotiations.

The Senator explained that the main stumbling block in the negotiations is the Republicans' desire to use the funding bill as leverage for their own immigration policies, which include strategies to remove people from the country. This, in turn, has complicated the already challenging task of dealing with the border crisis and finding a solution that addresses key issues such as increased security, hiring more case managers, and reducing the backlog of asylum hearings.

Merkley defended President Biden's decision to include border money in the original proposal, stating that it was a response to Republican demands. He pointed out that the border issue was not the only concern being addressed in the funding bill, as it was also linked to aid for Ukraine and other foreign policy matters. The Senator underscored the importance of funding Ukraine to counter the Russian assault and stressed that abandoning Ukraine would not only be a tragedy for its people but would also send a dangerous message to other dictators around the world.

Regarding the progressive Democrats' reaction to Biden's openness to tougher border policies, Senator Merkley acknowledged that there are diverse opinions within his party. He highlighted the need to address issues such as providing a clear path to legalization for undocumented immigrants who have long resided in the United States, as well as addressing the labor shortage through increased work visas. However, he expressed that the overarching concern should be restoring the structure of law at the border and resolving the ongoing crisis.

In conclusion, while the border negotiations remain challenging due to policy disagreements and political calculations, the Senator emphasized the importance of addressing the border crisis and providing aid to Ukraine. The delicate balance between addressing immigration concerns and ensuring national security continues to be a contentious issue between the two parties. With ongoing negotiations and intense discussions, it remains to be seen how a resolution will be reached on the border and foreign policy matters.
