Stirling Council residents will start receiving letters this week advising them when their grey and brown bins will be replaced as part of an overhaul of waste collections.
Earlier this year the council agreed to spend £2.017 million replacing up to 90,000 grey general waste and brown garden waste bins with new “comb bins”.
The removal and replacement of the bins is the first phase of the council’s controversial waste transformation programme - which will see the grey and blue bin collected every four weeks instead of fortnightly.
The council argue it will reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill and increase recycling rates but residents reacted with outcry to the plans and they sparked a 6000 signature online petition calling for them to be scrapped.
As part of the bin replacement plan, the council’s environment and housing committee recently approved the award of the contract to supply the household bins.
The tender also includes the rollout of the bins and collection and disposal of the old bins.
The bin replacement programme will be “funded from service efficiencies”.
The blue and green “comb bins” were already introduced in 2016, but the grey and brown bins have yet to make the transition.
The bin-swap letters - detailing the specific dates each household’s bins will be emptied, removed and replaced - are being sent out in batches throughout November, December and early January 2021 to tie in with bin swap dates, so not everyone will receive their letter in this first November drop.
