Billy Gilmour eyed for Rangers transfer return as Steven Gerrard could bank on Champions League factor

Rangers could reportedly make a daring bid to bring back Billy Gilmour on-loan.

The Chelsea midfielder is set to leave Stamford Bridge on a short-term deal to help him rack up vital first-team experience.

Norwich City have been strongly linked in a move that would keep the 20-year-old in the Premier League.

But the Daily Record report Steven Gerrard is one of a number of bosses who have made their interest in the former Ibrox academy star clear.

It's said no deal with the Canaries has yet been agreed and whether Gilmour leaves at all could depend on Mateo Kovacic staying with or leaving Chelsea.

Qualifying for the Champions League group stage could swing any potential tug-of-war in Rangers' favour, something few other likely suitors would be able to offer.

Gerrard's Premiership champions will begin their bid to reach the continent's top table in July, with their qualifying draw yet to be made.

Gilmour announced his arrival on the big stage with an assured performance in Scotland's Euro 2020 draw with England last Friday.

But just days he later he tested positive for Covid-19 and sat out a crushing defeat to Croatia that sent Steve Clarke's team tumbling out of the tournament.

Gilmour left Rangers as a 15-year-old to sign for Chelsea and was part of Thomas Tuchel's Champions League-winning squad last term.
