Bill Self to Miss Kansas’s First-Round NCAA Tournament Game

Kansas men’s basketball coach Bill Self will miss his team’s first-round men’s NCAA tournament game on Thursday afternoon, the program announced.

The Jayhawks, a No. 1 seed, will face No. 16 Howard on Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. ET in Des Moines.

Self was recently hospitalized with what has been described as “chest tightness and balance concerns.” The 60-year-old was discharged on Sunday after four days in the hospital. He missed the team’s run through the Big 12 tournament, with assistant Norm Roberts stepping in to lead the team to the conference finals, where it lost to Texas. Roberts will lead the team once again on Thursday.

Per the school’s release, Self “continues to progress well” from the health issue.

There is hope that Self can return for a potential second-round game on Saturday if Kansas advances to the round of 32.
