Biggest Orange parade of year in Glasgow as thousands set to take part on city streets this weekend

Thousands of people will be marching through Glasgow on Saturday (July 1) as part of Orange and Loyalist parades - including the biggest parade of the year.

Dozens of parades have been planned for the first weekend in July from local events to larger processions in the city centre.

Several will be starting at Glasgow Green before marching down nearby streets.

Around 4,000 people are expected to take part in the largest parade organised by the County Grand Orange Lodge Of Glasgow.

Their procession will begin around 10.30am at George Square before heading via St Vincent Street to Glasgow Cross and London Road and ending in Glasgow Green.

A further 600 people will be assembling at Kelvingrove Park at 10am before taking off down Argyle Street and onto St Vincent Street and meeting the 950 people marching from the east branch of the group at West George Street.

Local marches are also planned for Drumchapel, Baillieston, Govan, and Tollcross.

Glasgow Life has said that Bridgeton Library will be closed due to a planned march and anticipated disruption.

Police Scotland has confirmed that they will be working to reduce disruption to the wider community.

Chief Superintendent Stevie Dolan said: "Police Scotland is a rights-based organisation that puts our values of integrity, fairness, respect and a commitment to upholding human rights at the heart of everything we do.

"We are committed to supporting the human rights of individuals and groups who wish to assemble, balanced against the rights of the wider community and ensuring the safety of everyone involved.

"Our policing operation will be proportionate and focussed on public safety, as well as doing all we can with partners to reduce disruption to the wider community.”
