In the seventh of a series of articles on the Big Venture Challenge Winners, we introduce today Emma-Jane Cross, founder of CyberMentors.
Big Venture Challenge is a national programme, run by UnLtd and supported by the Big Lottery Fund, to find 25 of the most ambitious social entrepreneurs in England. The 25 winners all want investment so that their enterprises can deliver social impact on a significant scale. They will each receive a unique package of financial and non-financial support to help them achieve their goals. Meet winner No 7:
Emma-Jane Cross, founder of CyberMentors
Who are they?
Emma-Jane Cross is the founder and chief executive of Beatbullying and CyberMentors, an organisation which has twice been named charity of the year since being founded in 2002. Emma developed and designed the Beatbullying and CyberMentors model. She is a well-known, passionate and effective advocate of children's rights and winner of Charity Principal of the Year 2009.
What do they do?
CyberMentors is an online peer and professional mentoring and support service for young people aged 11-18, who are facing bullying and child-on-child violence. It uses innovative online technology to deliver support to young people in distress, in real time and on demand.
Why were they selected?
The judges and UnLtd were impressed by the social impact of CyberMentors and the way it tackles the growing problem of online as well as offline bullying. They felt that the Big Venture Challenge could add real value to the enterprise as it develops and expands its work.
