Big Brother's most controversial moments from wine bottle sex act to Hitler appreciation

Big Brother is finally set to make a dramatic return with a brand-new series on ITV after months of speculation.

ITV viewers were left gasping during Monday night's Love Island final when the broadcaster dropped a short trailer for the upcoming season as the iconic Big Brother eye appeared on screen with the show's theme tune playing in the background.

The iconic reality TV show hasn't been on air since 2018 when it was axed by Channel 5, but a 'Big Brother for the Love Island generation' is planned to be shown on ITV2 from next year - and the next series promises to be better than ever.

The fresh new series is rumoured to be immensely different from past years, with more emphasis being placed on inclusivity and diversity.

"This needs to be totally new and fresh. It’s all about drawing in a young audience. The aim is to get back to basics and interfere less, with fewer challenges," one insider revealed about the upcoming series.

With the exciting new series steadily approaching, it's unlikely that the younger generation will put up with controversies which have erupted on the reality TV show in the past.

From racism to bullying and graphic sexual activity, here, we take a look back at some of the most controversial moments in Big Brother history which would never make the cut for the 2022 series.

Roxanne Pallett's 'punch-gate'

Former Emmerdale actress Roxanne sparked controversy in 2018 after she falsely accused actor Ryan Thomas of punching her.

The playful exchange was caught entirely on camera, but Roxanne quickly ran to the diary room in tears and accused him of being a 'woman beater'.

On the outside, thousands of viewers threw their unwavering support behind Ryan over the 'punch-gate' incident.

The dramatic moment received over 11,000 Ofcom complaints and the actress has since apologised for 'overreacting' and 'over-exaggerating' the incident.

Meanwhile, Ryan's career blossomed after his traumatic experience on the Channel 5 show.

If something like this was to happen on the next series of Big Brother, there's little doubt that the person who is acting as 'the victim' would be removed from the show.

Christopher Biggins gets the axe after offensive statements

Television favourite Christopher Biggins was plunged into controversy after he appeared to blurt out a string of offensive statements during his time in the Big Brother house in 2016.

Bosses decided to remove Chris from the house after he made an anti-Semitic remark in front of Jewish contestant Katie Waissel.

He also caused widespread offence after suggesting bisexual people were 'the worst' during his time on the show.

At the time, a spokesperson said: “Big Brother has taken the decision to remove Christopher Biggins from the Celebrity Big Brother house.

"Since entering Big Brother, he has made a number of comments capable of causing great offence to housemates and the viewing public. Big Brother does not tolerate offensive language capable of causing widespread offence. Christopher Biggins has left the house.”

Shilpa Shetty and Jade Goody made headlines when they were embroiled in a race row during the the 2007 Celebrity Big Brother series.

During her time on the show, Jade referred to the Bollywood actress as 'Shilpa Poppadom' and talked about needing 'a day in the slums'.

Jade, along with Danielle Lloyd and Jo O'Meara were accused of 'bullying' and making racist comments towards the Indian actress.

Glamour model Danielle said Shilpa should 'f*** off home', while S Club 7 star Jo questioned if Indians were thin because they are 'sick all the time'.

The exchanges sparked national outrage and in India, Shilpa's fans burned effigies of Jade in the street.

Ofcom complaints soared to over 40,000, advertisers pulled out of sponsoring the show and the Prime Minister and other politicians waded into the race row.

Jade was eventually evicted from the house but TV bosses decided to ban an audience from coming to the eviction amid concern there would be 'riots' and 'violence' following her offensive comments towards Indian people.

All three CBB stars profusely apologised after leaving the house, insisting they were not racist, with Jade donating all of her fee to charity.

In 2016, Hollyoaks' actress Stephanie Davis entered the Big Brother house while she was madly in love with her then boyfriend on the outside, Sam Reece.

Her love for Sam quickly fell to pieces after she became romantically involved with fellow CBB contestant Jeremy McConnell.

As things heated up between Steph and the Irish model in the house, Sam was left devastated as he watched his girlfriend kiss and cuddle Jeremy while he was waiting to reunite with Stephanie.

After falling for Jeremy within a matter of days, Stephanie was dramatically dumped by Sam without even knowing it as he released a scathing statement at the time blasting his former girlfriend.

Despite the furore, Steph and Jeremy left the house as a couple before embarking on a tumultuous on-off relationship as well as welcoming a son together.

The couple faced allegations of cheating and Jeremy was then charged with horrific assault against Steph.

After viewers discovered her 'warped opinions' on serious matters of the past, bosses decided to immediately remove Tila from the house.

At the time, Channel 5 bosses told: “The views Tila had expressed, and permitted to remain uncorrected, are totally unacceptable and, accordingly, her continued involvement in the programme was untenable.”

Big Brother housemate Kinga Karolczak stunned the nation when she appeared to use an empty wine bottle to pleasure herself in the garden during her time on the show in 2005.

At about 3am, seemingly drunk and stumbling around the house, Kinga paused in front of fellow contestant Anthony Hutton and flashed him before picking up an empty wine bottle.

The Big Brother star proceeded to masturbate with the wine bottle while her fellow housemate Hutton squealed in disbelief.

Later that night, she gave an encore performance of the bottle act in the garden outside the house.
