Just like your favourite ex, Big Brother Australia is coming back for another round of chaos that’ll surely transport you back to the raunchy 2000s we all know and froth.
Reflecting on the rowdy reboot that’s set to light headlines on fire, host of the new era, Mel Tracina, has dished a bunch of details about the revamp and revealed which OG Big Brother host she’s reaching out to for advice.
If you know anything about Big Brother Australia, you would know that it was one of the most jaw-dropping pieces of media to have graced the Aussie airwaves for a variety of reasons.
It was raw, unfiltered, shocking and honestly, depending on the season and the eviction, it served as a beacon that would unite everyday Aussies.
Despite being cancelled a total of three times — the first time being in 2008 by Network 10, a second time in 2014 by Nine, and lastly, in 2024 by the Seven Network — Big Brother has risen like a phoenix, returning to 10 and the iconic stomping ground of Gold Coast’s Dreamworld.
Bringing this exciting new era to our screens, Mel Tracina takes on the hosting reins, revealing that the new gig “was a bit of a whirlwind”.
“It happened, I mean, I feel like it happened so quickly,” Tracina told PEDESTRIAN.TV, while dishing on what it was like getting the golden call to host such a massive reboot.
“I think they knew that I was a big fan of the show, and also obviously, with my work on The Cheap Seats as the Cultural Correspondent, they know how much I love reality TV. So, yeah, it was kind of just a fit.”

Reflecting on the past lives of Big Brother Australia, Tracina said it was a show that was “ahead of its time” and that this Network 10 reboot is “a reflection of where Australian audiences want a bit of nostalgia”.
Mel Tracina on Big Brother Australia‘s reach for the nostalgia factor
Honing in on that nostalgia factor, Big Brother Australia is returning to Dreamworld.
Looking back at the massive decision, Tracina opened up about a fond memory she had of being a Big Brother hand and seeing the iconic house when she visited the theme park.
“I remember going to look at the house when it was all like cordoned off in between seasons and taking photos. So there’s a lot of memories that are attached to it, which I think is really exciting,” Tracina said.
“But if you don’t have those memories attached, I love that idea of it being at a theme park. You know, you could be there with your friends and family on a day out, and the Big Brother house is literally a stone’s throw away.”
While audiences won’t be able to watch the house while filming, Tracina has revealed that some rides may give some pervs a cheeky peek into what’s going down in the reality TV compound.
“I know I’ve been told that certain rides you’d be able to see the house,” she joked.
Is Big Brother Australia bringing back Friday Night Games?
One of my personal memories was staying up to see the absolutely bonkers Big Brother Friday Night Games. It’s honestly what launched my passion for shows like Wipe Out and Fear Factor.
Unfortunately, for those who like some physical action (which doesn’t include snogging), this reboot will not be bringing those games back.
“This season, there’s no Friday Night Games, but there’s going to be enough hijinks going on in there,” Tracina dished.
“There will be a lot that Big Brother’s got up his sleeve.”
Reaching out to OG Big Brother hosts
With many different types of the show, Big Brother has seen a PLETHORA of hosts. For the OG seasons, Gretel Kileen wrangled up all the house tea before shock jocks, Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O, took on the gig.

On both Nine and Seven, Sonia Kruger guided our viewers on the Big Brother drama.
While Tracina didn’t spill on which host was her favourite, she did reveal that she has a plan to track down Kileen — who’s recently been dubbed the host of The Traitors Australia — at the Network 10 Christmas party for all the advice and tea.
“Gretel Killeen has been a busy woman this year. She was on The Amazing Race and has now been named as the host of The Traitors. So, I’m planning to hit her up at the Channel 10 Christmas party. I’ll be making a beeline for her with champagne in hand,” Tracina laughed.
Overall, Tracina hopes that this reboot “scratches the itch of OG fans” whilst bringing in a new generation of fans.
“I hope they get it, that they’re like, ‘Oh, I know why this show is so loved,’ and get on the bandwagon as well,” she dished.
Big Brother Australia kicks off on November 9 at 7pm on Channel 10 and 10Play.
