Beverage brands are producing bottled drinks without labels, targeting eco-conscious consumers and bulk-buying customers who have been spending more time at home due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Asahi Soft Drinks Co. Ltd. launched a green tea drink that is sold in unlabeled bottles on Oct. 6. A small sticker is attached to each bottle encouraging consumers to recycle.

The Asahi Green Tea product, which is available to buy online, is sold in branded cardboard boxes on which the drink's ingredients are printed. Each box contains 24 bottles, which at 630 milliliters are larger than the standard handy bottle size sold at most convenient stores.

Removing the label from bottled drinks was recorded as the second most stressful task when sorting garbage for recycling,

according to an online survey conducted by Coca-Cola (Japan) Co. Ltd. in April.

In August, the company launched label-free products, including Ayataka, a green tea brand that is sold exclusively online.

In April and August, Suntory Beverage & Food Ltd. manufactured limited quantities of its green tea Iyemon in bottles with no plastic labels for convenience stores and other locations. The drink's branding appeared on a small paper label that was attached to the neck of the bottles.
